✅ 2025 GOAL: Get your finances in order✅
Last night I attended a goal-setting workshop for 2025, run by the brilliant @julesvonhep . I love starting the year this way - setting positive intentions for 2025, from easy goals which you can tick off pretty quickly, right through to those goals which challenge and scare you, but make you step out of your comfort zone and ultimately change you for the better. One of my goals for 2025 is to run a Financial Eduction workshop via zoom to make it accessible to everyone, and to educate and empower people to take control of their own financial journey. It will allow you to take away practical things to implement straight away and improve your financial wellbeing. I had an overwhelmingly positive response to this on the workshop last night, so that has spurred me into action! If you want your money to work hard for you and to put a proper plan in place to reach your goals - then you absolutely need to be clued up on the tax year, and why it’s important.
The tax year is made up of 12 months — but it doesn’t run from January until December. Instead, the tax year begins and ends each April. So why is it important? Each year, you are given a fresh set of allowances you can use to save and invest your money - and these allowances are important for two reasons - first of all, they provide an opportunity for your money to grow, and in cases such as ISAs and pensions, shield that growth from any tax within those ‘wrappers’ 🍬. Second of all, they provide you with an opportunity to put proper plans in place to reach your goals over the medium to long term. These allowances are on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis. So here’s a couple of the allowances which are available, and a no-brainer to utilise:
💸ISA ALLOWANCE. You can save up to £20,000 into an ISA each tax year - why? Any growth on money you invest is free of tax, and when you withdraw the money, it’s free of tax too. What’s not to love about that?
🏝️PENSION ALLOWANCE. You can save the lower of your salary or £60,000 into your pension each tax year and receive tax relief from the government at your marginal rate. Who doesn’t like free money?
There are many other allowances you could be making the most of - so do your research, or speak with a financial professional to ensure you can make the most of your allowances before April, and get a head start on using your 2024/2025 allowances.

Pensions often get a bad rap, mainly because people think ‘they’re boring’ or ‘I’m too young for one’ or they simply just don’t understand what they do and why. But the reality is.. drum roll… pensions are exciting! Here are the 5 benefits to a pension, and why we should all have one:
🔐FINANCIAL SECURITY. Pensions are a great way to save for your future. Most of us have a goal in mind of when we want to stop working – what age that is, and what life looks like. By investing into a pension, you are providing yourself with an income for your future years when you’ve stopped working and enabling you to live the life you want.
💸YOU GET TAX RELIEF ON MONEY YOU PUT INTO YOUR PENSION. The government rewards you when you invest into your pension, by giving you back any tax you’ve paid on the income you invest into your pension. For example, if you’re a basic rate tax payer, the government top your pension up by 20%, and for higher and additional rate tax payers, you get 40 and 45% tax relief respectively. Also if you’re a business owner and you pay contributions from your Ltd co, you’ll get corporation tax relief.
👩‍💼EMPLOYER CONTRIBUTIONS. If you are employed, you will be auto-enrolled into your workplace pension scheme, where the minimum pension contribution is 3% employer/5% employee. So by you investing into your pension, your employer does too. Who doesn’t like free money?!
📈COMPOUND GROWTH Time is your ally! The earlier you start, the more time your money has to grow through compounding – compounding is like a snowball effect of growth on your pension, where the growth you make on your investment itself will start to generate a return, helping to turn your contributions into a robust retirement fund.
🤸FLEXIBILITY. There are different types of pension out there – there are your standard workplace pensions and also private pensions. You can run both in tandem, or some employers will happily pay into your private pension which is more personalised to you and your goals.
So if pensions are something that bamboozle you, or you want to find out more, don’t be afraid to seek professional advice on what’s right for you.

Many people forget about old workplace pensions, old life insurance policies they set up and never reviewed - by understanding this, you can understand whether these plans are not only still suitable for you based on your current circumstances, but whether they are still in the right place.
👩🏽‍💻WHAT ARE MY WORKPLACE BENEFITS? If I’m self-employed, what do I need to put in place? When you’re employed, your employer will provide benefits such as a pension, but also possibly additional benefits such as private healthcare or insurance. It’s important to understand what your workplace offers, so you can understand whether any gaps need filling in your current plans. When you’re self-employed, you don’t have the benefit of an employer scheme - so it’s important to ensure you have the right plans in place, so you don’t reach retirement and the lifestyle you want to lead is no longer achievable.
